Spending Locally Isn't Just About Products

"Back into the vault" are a series of posts we're currently re-sharing on our Facebook page (in some cases additional comments on an older post were added to the topic, or we figured out something else to say about a particular subject). As we dredge up a few things up from our archives, the post below was from November 8, 2015 as we saw some suggestions from the Monona County Economic Development Partnership in Onawa, Iowa. What we love is expanding out the concept of "spending locally" to include services - the idea that not everything purchased must be a product or a thing.

"Simplify. Think Local. Spend Local."

Two emerging trends are challenging the way we view gift giving this holiday season: one is to simplify and the other is to shop locally. Many are tired of the crazy commercialization of the holidays. Believing that more “stuff” doesn’t bring happiness, they want to simplify by giving gifts with meaning and value. Some give beautiful hand crafted presents and food items. But how does one follow this trend when they aren’t “crafty”? We can look to our local businesses and our own creativity. Think Local. Spend Local. There are many ways to give thoughtful gifts of value by spending locally. You can be sure they will be appreciated!

Many people don’t want more “stuff” but would love a gift of service. How about a gift certificate for a massage, manicure, car detailing, or a photo session? Sign a friend up for a local art class. Maybe a loved one has a “to do” list and could use some help getting things done? Paint a room, make minor repairs, or shampoo the carpets for them. You can get the paint, hardware and carpet shampooer locally. If you prefer, you can hire a local handy man to do the work.

You could also create a theme bucket/box/basket for the recipient’s interests—from sewing to fishing, photography to gardening, cooking to hunting, and everything in between. How about a “spa” theme with locally handcrafted soaps, lotions and candles? Put together a food basket with your homemade spaghetti sauce, a bottle of wine and pasta! Why not create a family gift with a board game, popcorn and beverages? Local craft fairs are a great place to buy handmade and locally produced items for the gift baskets. We at Go Independent, Shop Small (Anywhere USA) encourage you to always think "outside the box" every single time you are spending. Creative choices for gift-giving that work to support individuals, makers, artists, local mechanics, bowling alley, etc are always in good taste! Thanks for reading.
