“They Said You Mattered”

While the title of this blog post is admittedly, a bit heavy on the doom and gloom vibe, I stuck with it since the message itself is pretty darn important. Without a doubt, I believe this simple, completely non-typical poem of sorts will resonate with many of you - the hard-working, caring, dedicated and involved small business owners.

While I can't say there's an easy solution, it does seem this post could serve to drive home a point; to remind us all for the continual, ongoing and constant need to educate the public, share the stories of the best local places that make Anyplace, USA into a town, city or community we are proud of. The history, character and people of the beloved small businesses spread across America's Main Streets, down towns and rural areas are far too important to lose - and yet I've seen the scenario illustrated below play out countless times, even in my own retail establishment - and there's no easy way to sugarcoat how greed drives people, both to the big box retailers as well as out of town and away from the very heart and soul of their neighborhoods. We must stand together, work together, inform and share the message that our independents are too valuable to let go of.

"You matter, people said, as they head for the door -
We love this small grocery; yes, absolutely we care.
But they got in the car, and then drove far away -
Believing big box stores rule, and less they would pay.

Our little league team needs uniforms and bats -
They said with a smile, standing there in your store.
Would you sponsor the kids, be a part of the team -
It's your town after all, don't step on their dream.

Because community matters, we all can agree -
And when everyone joins in, more growth we will see.
So you handed a check, to help out the sports -
You read it's good to give back, say all the reports.

And they smiled and left, chattering with their plans -
For the upcoming party, celebrating season's start.
Tomorrow we'll go, for burgers, chips and more -
To save at big box Costco...as they went out your door."
