History: National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day is observed annually on March 29th and honors small, independent, family-owned businesses. The holiday began when Rick Sega wanted a way to recognize the work of his parents who first opened a hat shop called Ruth’s in Everett, Massachusetts on March 29, 1939. The store later evolved into specialty clothing store for women and moved to Medford, Massachusetts bringing in over $2 million in revenue. The store operated for nearly six decades and eventually closed in 1997. The holiday celebrates how a small one room operation can grow to a successful business to inspire all business owners. Via Amsterdam Printing: "If you’re a small business owner and March 29 isn’t circled on your calendar, it should be — it’s National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day! While most people are familiar with Small Business Saturday, which encourages people to patronize local small retailers, National Mom and Pop Business Owners Day is all about honoring you — your hard, work, your dedication, and your vital contributions to the economy."
The definition of a Mom and Pop store: "A small, independent, usually family-owned, controlled, and operated business that has a minimum amount of employees, has only a small amount of business volume, and is typically not franchised, therefore open for business only in a single location." That may be.....but they left out so much. Read more here.

To celebrate this date could be to honor the journey of independence and storefronts, brick and mortar stores and the people and faces behind them. This is about the journey of us as independents, about what we live, do and breathe each day. It's about the people with a dream, because as small business owners we are a breed unlike any other; determined, dedicated, unstoppable. We are different and passionate and we know what it's like to build something from nothing - our companies may require countless hours of hard work but when you care madly and deeply about what you do - it's pure magic when it all comes together. On March 29th, stop, spend and support the places you and I are so very lucky to have in our communities.
